Dr. Schroeder is currently an associate professor and coordinator of the School Psychology program at Texas A&M University - Commerce. She is also serving as Interim Department Head of the newly merged department of Psychology, Counseling and Special Education. Dr. Schroeder earned her BS in Psychology and English from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and then went on to graduate school in Educational Psychology, also at the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
Prior to beginning at Texas A&M University – Commerce in 2004 Dr. Schroeder worked in the Dallas Independent School District as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology. Her main role was to facilitate prereferral interventions for students having difficulty either academically or socially. Additionally, she served as a member of the districts crisis team, providing services to students and staff during stressful events.
Dr. Schroeder has earned recognition at Texas A&M University – Commerce for both her teaching and service. In 2009 and 2010 she was awarded the Texas A&M System Teaching Excellent Award. In 2008 she was awarded the Neill Humfeld Distinguished Faculty Award for Service.
Dr. Schroeder’s research focuses on mental health issues in schools, including crisis assessment and intervention, and culturally competent assessment practices in special education. She is interested in the availability of services to students in the schools and how systems-level interventions can facilitate better mental health outcomes for all students. She is currently working on projects designed to help schools identify and appropriately intervene with youth who are at-risk for suicide and violence, and has also recently worked on a project designed to assist school assessment personnel, such as diagnosticians and school psychologists, in understanding the impact of culture on psychoeducational assessment results.
