Financial Aid

Financial aid is available to eligible students to assist with the costs of attending college, and study abroad opportunities sponsored by A&M Commerce could be covered by financial aid. Your first step in applying for financial aid of any kind is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA). You may qualify for low-interest, forgivable federal loans as well as other kinds of scholarships and grants.

The applications for FAFSA and TASFA open October 1st of each year. We are currently accepting applications for the upcoming, 2022/2023 academic year (Fall 2022-Summer 2023). FAFSA and TASFA applications for the 2023/2024 academic year (Fall 2023-Summer 2024) will be available to students October 1, 2022. We encourage students to submit their FAFSA or TASFA applications as early as possible so that they have the best opportunities for limited grant funding, if eligible for these funds.

Not sure which application to complete?

  • FASFA is for U.S. citizens, permanent U.S. residents and eligible non-citizens.
  • TAFSA may be for you if you are not a U.S. citizen but you graduated from a Texas high school.
  • If you are an international student, you are likely not eligible to complete the FAFSA or TASFA, but you may be eligible for scholarships and private loans.

It is important to note that our Donor Funded Scholarship Portal also opens October 1st of each year. Scholarship opportunities for the 2022/2023 academic year have closed, but the portal will re-open for the 2023/2024 award year on October 1, 2022. All current students and those prospective students who are admitted to the university are encouraged to submit their general scholarship application in the Donor Funded Scholarships app in myLEO as soon as it’s available. This application helps to match students to several scholarship opportunities. Additional scholarship opportunities that may require additional steps, like an essay, may be available once this general application has been submitted. Donor funded scholarships are not available for summer terms.

Important Reminders about Financial Aid and Scholarships:

  • There are limits to the amount of federal student loans and federal Pell grant a student can receive each academic year, if eligible. There are also life-time limits to these funds, all of which are set by the Department of Education. You can check your loan and Pell grant usage by logging into www.studentaid.gov with your FSA User ID and password.
  • Most financial aid funds requires a minimum of at least 6 credit hours each semester. The credit hours must be required to complete a student’s degree plan. We cannot apply financial aid to courses that do not apply to your degree plan, are not required to be re-taken to complete your degree, or just enrolled in to meet the 6 hour requirement.
  • Many grants pro-rate based on enrollment. Full time enrollment (12+ credit hours needed to complete the degree) may be required to receive a full disbursement.
  • Some institutional scholarships, like the Blue and Gold or Presidential scholarships, require 15+ credit hours at TAMUC each semester (fall and spring) to receive a disbursement.

Awarding Financial Aid  - Describes how aid is awarded, what to do once you’ve received an award offer, when financial aid is released to pay university charges, and what instances we cannot apply financial aid.

Elm Select – Allows students to compare private education lenders prior to applying for a private education loan. This provides good information that might help “match” them with a lender that best meets their needs – if a lender allows for less than 6 hours of enrollment, allows for students to receive a loan while not meeting academic progress measures, etc.
