Passport Information

To be overseas, getting a passport is your first step to have your ticket punched to see the world. With getting a passport, one must plan in advance to obtain a U.S. Passport that can last you up to ten years. Below are the steps and information that can support you on getting a passport.

When should I get a passport?

Students or faculty that are expecting to go abroad must consider receiving their passport prior to TAMUC study abroad deadlines as it is a required document or at least 4 to 6 months prior to going overseas if traveling independent from our university. We advise our community to visit the travel.state.gov for all updates and information relating to passport processing.

How to get a U.S. Passport

With getting a U.S. is a tedious task. First, you will need to complete the following documentation in order to be prepared:

  • Fill out a DS-11 Application Form
  • Proof of Citizen Document
  • Proof of Identity Document
  • Passport & Visa Photos
  • Appointment Information
  • Pay Fees

Obtaining your Passport Photos

Getting the correct passport photo is important!  Here are a few tips that can help you

Photo Basics

  1. Submit a color photo, taken in last 6 months
  2. Use a clear image of your face. Do not use filters commonly used on social media.
  3. Have someone else take your photo. No selfies.
  4. Take off your eyeglasses for your photo.
  5. Use a plain white or off-white background.

Passport Photo Locations

  • Your local USPS Office
  • Your local CVS, Walgreens, or Walmart (Call in Advance)

Mailing Instructions

Please review your passport documents and make they sure meet the criteria of you obtaining a U.S. passport prior to mailing. Depending on your location, please consider the time you would need your passport to the appropriate processing timeline.

When submitting your documents, please plan in advance:

  • You can apply for routine service and expect to receive a passport in 8-11 weeks (not including mailing time).
  • You also have the option of paying an additional $60 for expedited service to receive your passport in 5-7 weeks (not including mailing time).
  • If you need your passport in less than 8 weeks, please visit the U.S. Department of State’s website.
