Mathemartist Competition Announcement & Rules

The Second Mathemartist Competition

A Mathemartist is an artist who uses mathematics to create arts. This Mathemartist Competition is to use DESMOS Graphing Calculator to create artworks. Cosponsored by Cypress Bank, the Department of Mathematics at Texas A&M University-Commerce (TAMUC) cordially invites students of high schools, community colleges and TAMUC, who have not received a bachelor’s degree to participate in the Mathemartist Competition.

AWARDS

Winners will be selected by the Department of Mathematics for the following awards and scholarships [1, 2, 3]:  

  • First Prize: $200 in gift cards and a Mathematics Excellence Scholarship of $2000.
  • Second Prize: $100 in gift cards and a Mathematics Excellence Scholarship of $1000.
  • Third Prize: $50 in gift cards and a Mathematics Excellence Scholarship of $600.
  • Ten Honorable Mentions: A $10 gift card and a Mathematics Excellence Scholarship of $300.
  • Souvenirs: Participants are welcome to pick up a T-shirt or baseball cap with an A&M-Commerce Math logo in the Math Office in Commerce, Texas.
    • [1] To receive the Mathematics Excellence Scholarship, a winner must notify the department head of mathematics, and attend Texas A&M University-Commerce as a full time math major within two years after graduation from high school, or two years from winning the Scholarship for college students.
    • [2] The Mathematics Excellence Scholarship can be accumulated. Once enrolled, the total amount of scholarship will be credited to the student account evenly per semester for the planned study period.
    • [3] If a winner is interested in a major other than mathematics, the Department of Mathematics will recommend the winner to the corresponding department for a scholarship, should the winner express interested in attending TAMUC.

RULES OF COMPETITION

  1. Eligibility of Participants: high school students of 11th and 12th grade; college students who have not taken more than 70 credit semester hours; and any current undergraduate TAMUC students, in the United States.
  2. Artwork: Use the DESMOS graphing calculator to design and create a graph with the words, Have a Mathy Holiday. Objects like plants, animals, buildings, mountains, waters or people can be included.  
  3. Deadline: The deadline for submitting the artwork is 11:59 PM (23:59), November 30, 2023, local time of the participant. Winners will be announced before or by December 20, 2023.
  4. Submission: To participate in this competition, please complete the Mathemartist Competition Submission Form with the DESMOS link to your artwork. Click this hyper link or the direct link, https://bit.ly/mathemartist to the Submission Form.
  5. Copyright: All submissions must be the original work of the student, and do not contain copyrighted images. The student must own the intellectual property. By participating in this Competition, a winner authorizes the Department of Mathematics for free use of the artwork, student’s name and affiliation on the Department website and for the purpose of teaching and recruitment.
  6. Winner Selection: Winning artworks will be selected by the faculty of the Department of Mathematics based on the design, color, and math equations used. Considerations will be on originality/Creativity, Difficulty/Complexity, Visual Content, Detail/Delight, Use of features provided by DESMOS such as animation and sounds,
