Please Submit:

• Abstract for general submission (up to 250 words; plus 1 extra page for images, references, etc.); indicate if paper (20m + Q/A) or poster or either, provide a title.
• Panels of 3 papers (90 minutes)
• Workshops (90 minutes)

• Any topic in humor research is welcome, including and not restricted to literary studies, psychology, sociology and linguistics.

Important Dates :

• Early Submission for those who need acceptance letters to plan travel

• Late Submission for local participants or those who can plan their travel late

Conference Schedule

Note: Attendees should plan to arrive on Thursday, 3/9/2017, either in the morning to attend pre-conference workshops, or by the evening for plenary talks. Full conference sessions will run all day Friday and Saturday, with casual events planned for both evenings. Return travel can commence on Sunday, 3/12/2017.

Workshops

Multimodal tools for the analysis of humor

This workshop introduces a set of tools and methods to perform a multimodal analysis of humor in spoken discourse. The hands-on approach will provide the attendees with practical materials, templates, and procedures to perform methodologically sound analyses. No prior knowledge assumed. All materials included.

The General Theory of Verbal Humor: Methods and applications

This workshop will introduce scholars from any field to most prominent family of theories in linguistic humor research, namely the Semantic Script Theory of Humor (SSTH), its main offshoot, the General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH), and its latest computational-linguistic incarnation, the Ontological Semantic Theory of Humor (OSTH). Participants will learn how to apply these theories to the study of humor by means of analyzing a variety of examples from different sources. Taught by Attardo, Hempelmann, Raskin, and Rayz.

• $25 for students (please provide proof of student status on site)
