Gerard Huber

Gerard Huber was born and raised in Waterloo, Iowa. He received his undergraduate training Painting and Printmaking at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and his Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, studying with George Ortman.

Mr. Huber received two fellowships to attend the Artist Colony at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Lynchburg, Virginia, and one fellowship at the Cummington Community of Art, Cummington, Massachusetts.

In 1994 Mr. Huber received a National Endowment for the Arts/Mid-America Arts Alliance Fellowship in Painting which allowed him to travel extensively in Italy and photograph ancient Greek and Roman sculpture for his painting.

Research interests:

I intend these pictures as mythological footprints of conflicting values in our times. A present-day worship of the human body, the perfect physique – and its tangent to an ancient Greek concept, physical perfection as a mirror for spiritual perfection – is expressed here by the contrast of modern, life figures arrested in a moment of interaction with archetypal forms.

The potent effect of natural light falling on the sculpted stone gods and goddesses is a visual inspiration and establishes a classical mood in my dialogue with the viewer, which I have reinforced using Old Master painting techniques, a limited palette of color and elegant, and tension-suffused compositions.
