School Librarian Certification

Approved by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) this certification program is only within the State of Texas.

The School Librarian Certification program in the Department of Higher Education and Learning Technology at Texas A&M University-Commerce is 21 credit hours (7 classes) and fully online. Courses are accelerated, offered in a 7-week format that allows students to complete 2 classes per semester; one course in the first half, and one in the second half.

Admission Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution.

  • A conferred masters degree from a regionally accredited institution with at least a 3.00 or higher overall GPA.

  • A valid Texas teacher or principal certificate.

  • Complete application for admission to graduate school at (www.applytexas.org).

  • Application fee $50.

  • File official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work.

  • An Essay.

  • ETEC 579 Administration of Educational Technology Programs

  • LIS 512 Information Reference and Mediographic Services

  • LIS 515 Cataloging and Classification

  • LIS 524 Developing General and Specialized Collections

  • LIS 527 Books and Related Materials for Children and Young Adults

  • LIS 540 Administration of the School Library

  • LIS 550 Practicum in a Library Media Center

    **LIS 550 the library practicum is to be taken after all other courses listed above.

State Requirements for School Librarian Certification

In addition to completion of an SBEC-approved School Librarian Certification program the Texas State Board of Educator Certification (SBEC) requires the following before being awarded certification:

  • 2 years classroom teaching experience, fulltime

  • A Master’s degree

  • A passing score on the TExES (test #150)

Note: The required classroom teaching experience of 2 years, full time must be complete, and a copy of official service record for each year of classroom service provided to apply for certification before becoming fully certified.

How to Apply:

  1. Complete Apply Texas application at www.applytexas.org.

  2. Request official transcripts from any previous institutions/degrees to be sent to Texas A&M University Commerce.

  3. Apply for admission to the Educator Certification Program by completing the online Professional Certification Program Application. Submit all required documentation and the TEA certification-processing fee (TAC 229.9.7) -- as described on those pages.

  4. Track the progress of your application through your assigned myLeo Account.

Important: You are eligible to take the TExES after completion of all seven certification courses (listed above), then apply for certification at Center for Educator Certification follow the instructions given there.

If pursuing a master’s degree in Educational Technology Library Science (MEd or MS) additional classes and requirements are required click here. For other master’s degree you may be pursuing check with an advisor in that field to know what classes count.

NOTE: This program is restricted to preparation of School Librarians in the state of Texas, and does not apply to other types of librarianship. Those seeking librarian certification in states other than Texas should contact the educator certification agency in their home state to check licensure requirements.
