The Faculty Advisory Council (Council) was instituted as a replacement for the previous Faculty Senate in compliance with Senate Bill 37 of the 89th Texas State Legislative Session. The Council was formed an accordance with University Rule 12.04.99.R1 Faculty Advisory Council, under the authority of the Texas A&M System Policy 12.04 Faculty Advisory Council and Texas Education Code 51.3522 Faculty Council or Senate, and activated in the Spring 2026 semester.

Role of the Council

The primary function of the Faculty Advisory Council is,

to foster a community of mutual respect and cooperation within the University to facilitate effective faculty participation in academic programs, to broaden communication in matters of concern to the University, and to engage the faculty's skills in the guidance of university programs (Rule 12.04.99.R1, p. 1).

The Council, "works closely to provide advice to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Deans Council to develop and review all academic policies and procedures affecting faculty." (Rule 12.04.99.R1, p. 1)

Membership

The Council consists of 25 members comprised as follows:

Elected Members, 2-year terms

3 - College of Agricultural Science and Natural Resources
2 - College of Business
4 - College of Education and Health Services
3 - College of Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts
2 - College of Innovation and Design
3 - College of Science and Engineering
1 - University Library

Appointed Members, 1-year terms

7 - One representative from each college/library appointed by the University President.

Council officers, consisting of the Presiding Officer (President), Associate Presiding Officer (Vice-President), and Secretary, are appointed by the University President.

Meetings and Agenda Development

Council Meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month during the long semesters when classes are in session. Business is introduced before the Council through the submission of proposals to the Council's Executive Committee for consideration or referral.
