The School Counseling is a 51 semester hour program (also requires an application to the Professional Certification program to meet state requirements, see Educator Certification & Academic Services for application).

School Counseling Certification

School Counseling Degree Plan consists of 51 hours: 

Each course carries 3 semester hours credit.

Level 1 Courses (No prerequisites; 9 semester hours; Prerequisite to Level 2) 

COUN 501: Intro. to Coun. Prof.

COUN 510: Coun. Theor. & Tech.

COUN 516: Basic Coun. Skills (turn in an application for all clinical classes-516, 548, 551, 552, 552)

Those pursuing the School Counseling emphasis can also be eligible for the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) LPC credential by successfully completing a couple of extra classes (Psy 503 and a marriage and family course).

Master of Science in Counseling

School Counseling Emphasis

  • For those who wish to work in public school settings as a Professional School Counselor
  • In Texas, must hold a valid teaching certificate AND have 2 years of full-time, public school teaching experience
  • Designed to lead to certification as Professional School Counselor
  • With some additional coursework, can eventually lead to Licensed Professional Counselor credential in Texas
  • 10-year job outlook is GREATER THAN AVERAGE (U.S. Dept. of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook)
  • Median Salary – mid $50K (Texas; less nationally)
  • Accredited by Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP)
  • 51 semester hours
  • Time to completion – 9 or 10 semesters, depending upon starting term
