Texas Association for Black Personnel in Higher Education

The A&M-Commerce Chapter of the Texas Association for Black Personnel in Higher Education (TABPHE) benefits you as a faculty or staff member by providing support and resources to help you serve your students and the surrounding community.

The organization is open to all faculty and staff members at A&M-Commerce. We invite you to join us for monthly meetings, service projects, and to help us guide and honor our Black faculty, staff and students, and celebrate their successes.

VISION

TABPHE's vision is to ensure that the higher education system in Texas provides impartial opportunities and advancement for Black personnel while fostering a positive environment for Black students to successfully matriculate.

MISSION

TABPHE is a statewide, voluntary educational association that represents all levels of higher education and serves as a voice for Black faculty, staff, students and administrators in order to ensure a better educational system for all. TABPHE provides an avenue for professional development opportunities that enrich higher education personnel and improve the quality of their professional growth.

GOALS

To act as an advocate for ethnic minorities in the educational process.
To evaluate, promote and support programs pertinent to ethnic minorities in colleges, universities, and communities.
To encourage and promote collaboration among ethnic minorities in the educational process.
To assist colleges and universities in the recruitment, placement, and retention of students, faculty, staff, and administrators, and to assist in other efforts relative to achieving the educational objectives of the institutions.
To stimulate interest in and raise awareness of current issues relevant to ethnic minorities in higher education.
To provide a vehicle for disseminating the viewpoint of ethnic minorities regarding the education of African Americans, equal opportunities, and affirmative action.
To assist in and support the strengthening of ethnic minority programs at the secondary school level.

HISTORY

The A&M-Commerce chapter of TABPHE—and the entire TABPHE organization—began in 1973 in Commerce, Texas. Founder Ivory Moore, Sr., served as a college dean at East Texas State University (now A&M-Commerce), and he started TABPHE. Today, the organization includes eight Texas chapters.
