Curricular Practical Training or CPT allows students who have internship or Research research courses to obtain part-time (20 hours or less) or full-time (21 hours to 40 hours) of paid work experience outside the classroom. CPT must be authorized before any employment may begin. The CPT employment and the academic course must be an integral part of the student's academic major. Students will not be eligible for CPT until they have been enrolled at A&M-Commerce for an academic year (fall, spring).
Students applying for CPT are required to attend a CPT workshop before they may apply for CPT. The OIP will not accept CPT applications until after attending the CPT workshop. Registration is required to attend the workshop. Students who have not registered for the workshop by 5pm the day before the workshop will not be allowed to attend.
Once a student meets all eligibility requirements for CPT they may apply as follows. To apply students may either drop off all documents listed below at the OIP in Ferguson 221 or mail their documents to the OIP. Friends or family may not drop off or pick up any documents. Do not have your documents forwarded to the OIP:
• Students applying for CPT for the summer or fall semester may begin applying April 1
• Students applying for CPT for the spring semester may begin applying November 1
Please note the CPT application processing time is up to five business days (Monday through Friday). Request to expedite an application will not be considered. The OIP does not process any applications or requests the week prior to the beginning of the fall and spring semester due to new student check and International Student Orientation. CPT approval is at the discretion of the OIP regardless if the academic has approved the CPT documentation.
There are no additional travel regulations for students on approved CPT other than normal guidance related to any current F-1 international students. For more information see the travel handout below.
