Campus Recreation, in partnership with students of Texas A&M University-Commerce (TAMUC), respectfully request student approval for an increase in the Recreational Sports Fee to begin in Fall 2015. We are asking students to increase the current fee from $65 per semester to $150 per semester by voting on-line November 4-6, 2014. This would be an increase of $85 per semester starting in Fall 2015 for all newly admitted students. The increase of $85 would result in the expansion of 45,000 sq. ft. to the existing Morris Recreation Center facility, increased hours of operation, additional programming, and new equipment. Also, in Fall 2019, an increase in the fee would allow a $400,000 annual giveback to the Student Service Fee for additional student programs and initiatives. Below are some answers to frequently asked questions:
The Recreational Sports Fee has not been increased since 2003. We currently have the lowest Recreational Sports Fee in the A&M System with the second largest enrollment. Additional funding will allow Campus Recreation to meet and expand student service needs in our Intramural Sports, Club Sports, Fitness, Outdoor Adventure, Special Events, Aquatics, and Informal Recreation Programs.
Most of our fitness equipment has been in the Morris Recreation Center since 2003. Cardio equipment should be replaced every 3 to 5 years. Weight equipment should be replaced every 8 to 10 years. Campus Recreation seeks to repair and replace old machines with new, innovative, and cutting edge fitness equipment that is operational and under warranty. This type of fitness equipment will allow the Morris Recreation Center to consistently meet the needs of our growing enrollment.
Campus Recreation recently increased its hours of operation on weekends during the Fall and Spring semesters. Increasing weekend hours will provide 4 more hours of operation per week. During the break and mini sessions, the MRC will be open an additional 12 hours per week. We have also added 2 hours per week to our Summer hours of operation. We will continue this plan for the next 8 to 10 years.
With a larger recreation facility and additional programming, we will need to increase our student staff to meet the service needs of our growing enrollment.
In order to partner with departments and student organizations that provide student services, Campus Recreation will ask for less funding from the Student Service Fee in the following fiscal years:
This will allow student organizations the opportunity to request additional funding from the Student Service Fee for their programs and services.
The increase would take effect in the Fall of 2015. As a result of Guaranteed Tuition & Fees, the Recreational Sports Fee would increase for newly admitted students beginning in the Fall of 2015. Current students will continue to pay the present Recreational Sports Fee.
