First Thursdays - A Little Coffee Talk
First Thursdays: Just a Little Coffee Talk
Sometimes all you need is an informal environment to create thoughtful discussion and for great ideas to flow. That is why members of the Economics & Finance Society and members of Beta Alpha Psi, an international honors organization for accounting, finance, and information systems students and professionals, host a monthly informal coffee meeting at Sandella's Café in Gee Library to discuss current economic and financial events and to plan future university events.
First Thursdays typically occur the week after the Society hosts its Distinguished Speaker, so it provides an opportunity for attendees to reflect on the speaker's talk. For example, Rocky Miracle, the fourth speaker in the 2013-2014 series, spoke about yield curves, which became a major discussion point during the proceeding coffee meeting.
These meetings have also been the birthplace of many of the Economics & Finance Society's events: mock interview events; resume building classes; and social branding workshops. Given the competitive job market, professional networking and development is the number one concern for both groups, and both groups are eager to succeed professionally after graduation.
If you are looking for something to fill your social calendar on the first Thursday of the month, look no further than the Economics & Finance Society and Beta Alpha Psi's First Thursdays coffee meeting. Everyone is welcomed; no prior knowledge is required. All you need is a thirst for discussion and coffee. See you next month!
