Dr. Carmen Salazar, Professor, joined the faculty at Texas A&M University-Commerce in 1999, after earning her doctorate in counseling with emphasis in Gender and Ethnic Research from University of New Mexico. Dr. Salazar had extensive experience as a Licensed Professional Counselor in New Mexico, working with survivors of childhood sexual abuse, victims and perpetrators of domestic violence, and home-bound elderly clients. Her teaching, scholarship and service reflect her commitment to group work, diversity, and social justice. In the counseling program she frequently teaches group dynamics, diversity courses, research applications, and theories, at the Master’s and doctoral level. At A&M Commerce, Dr. Salazar currently serves as the chair of the Institutional Review Board (IRB). She has served on the executive boards of two divisions of the American Counseling Association: the Association for Specialists in Group Work (2009-2012) and Counselors for Social Justice (2001-2005). She is a member of the editorial board of the Journal for Social Action in Counseling and Psychology (2007-2014) and the American Counseling Association Editorial Advisory Board (2006-2014); she served on the editorial board of the Journal for Specialists in Group Work (2007-2010) and the Journal of Humanistic Counseling, Education and Development (2001-2005). Dr. Salazar is author of the book: Group Work Experts Share Their Favorite Multicultural Activities: A Guide to Diversity-Competent Choosing, Planning, Conducting, and Processing and co-editor of the book Social Justice in Group Work: Practical Interventions for Change.  She has also published numerous articles and book chapters on multiculturalism, group work, and social justice issues. In 2011 Dr. Salazar received the Group Work Practice Award from the Association for Specialists in Group Work in recognition of her scholarly contributions to group work practice. In 2012 she was named a Fellow of the American Counseling Association.
