Navigating Language Learner Correction: A Pragmatic Approach

In this session, we'll explore the oral corrective feedback practices of language teachers, delving into the nuanced pragmatic phenomena that shape this essential process. Join us for a detailed examination of effective strategies and considerations in providing constructive feedback to language learners.

Teaching Grammar Without Fear 

The teaching of grammar using discovery procedures (heuristics) rather than rules eliminates most of the sources of anxiety in students (and teachers alike). Moreover, the realization that grammar is not an absolute truth to be uncovered, but rather a process of discovery based on a few simple and easy to memorize procedures that eliminate much of the apprehension in students. The presentation will provide an overview of the grammar of English and numerous examples.

Teaching Pronunciation in World English Context: Prosody matters 

This session begins by positioning the discussion of pronunciation instruction in the context of World Englishes within the historical debate of nativism and intelligibility paradigm, with a focus on what pronunciation features are important for mutual intelligibility. Particularly, the discussion will address suprasegmental features, which are marginalized in ESL classrooms and largely excluded as core features in the Lingua Franca Core (Jenkins, 2000). Backed by current research on the role of suprasegmental features on listeners’ perceptual judgments on speakers from different L1 backgrounds (e.g. Huang, 2019), this webinar discusses prosodic features that are important for mutual intelligibility, such as sentence stress, pauses, and intonation. Also, this session will provide teaching tips for teaching teach suprasegmental features in an EFL language classroom. 

Re-thinking Writing Assessment in Light of ChatGPT

This session introduces participants to the strengths and weaknesses of ChatGPT (or other Large Language Models) as a text generator and identifies alternative strategies for assessing student writing. Participants will also discuss ways to use ChatGPT to improve writing skills, including integrating ChatGPT into classroom activities, peer review sessions, and self-revisions, with the goal of fostering an inclusive and learner-centered environment. 

Breaking Barriers: Empowering Language Learners through Accessibility

If you're in the field of education, you've probably encountered the terms "ADA" and "accessibility" in discussions revolving around electronic course materials in the classroom. While we acknowledge the importance of creating accessible content for individuals covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), it's equally significant to recognize how accessible content significantly enhances the learning experience for language learners. Join me in this session as we delve into the ways in which accessibility plays a pivotal role in supporting language learning. We'll also explore a variety of "quick-fixes" that empower you to create electronic course materials that are not only accessible but also contribute to a more equitable learning environment.

Humor in the Classroom

This presentation considers the pros and cons of using humor in the classroom and presents a set of hands-on tips and techniques for teachers who wish to use humor in their classroom. The scholarly literature will be reviewed, but the presentation will also include some hands-on activities to demonstrate the production of humorous materials. No prior experience required.

How AI models language and what you should and shouldn’t expect 

This session will cover the development and state of the art of the core models in Artificial Intelligence with a focus on human language interaction. Based on this foundation you will understand their fundamental strengths and weaknesses. The intention is to provide you with an introduction to the basic inner workings so you become an informed professional who can evaluate AI application for tasks in your language classroom, independent of hype or doomsaying.

Introversion and Extraversion - What every language teacher should know.

It's not uncommon for the general public to have a rudimentary understanding of what people mean when they say, "I'm an extravert" or "I'm an introvert." You might even find yourself using these terms when discussing your students' behaviors in the classroom. However, over time, certain "folk psychology" ideas have become closely linked with these personality traits – for instance, the belief that extraverts are inherently confident while introverts struggle with social anxiety. Regrettably, these misconceptions have been widely accepted as undeniable truths and are frequently cited as such in second language acquisition literature. In this session, we'll delve into the intended conceptualization and definition of extraversion and introversion from a psychological standpoint. Together, we'll unravel the common misunderstandings that circulate in today's discourse, particularly when it comes to language learners in the classroom.

From a state other than Texas?

No problem! Some states don't require us to file as a credit provider (e.g., Oklahoma), in which case, the hours you earn from this event can be submitted as professional development hours/credits/points in your own state (following any additional state requirements you might have; e.g., school administrator approval).

If your state, like Texas, does require providers to formally apply for CPE provider status, let us know! We're open to applying for provider status in other states.
