MSN-Family Nurse Practitioner

The Master of Science in Nursing program prepares Family Nurse Practitioners needed to meet the demand for primary care.  Both full and part-time options are available in this 46 semester credit hour program which prepares graduates to sit for national certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner. 

Courses are delivered using a combination of traditional face-to-face instruction, online courses, and web-enhanced or hybrid courses.  Clinical instruction is conducted as traditional hands-on practice in a variety of Northeast Texas clinical settings.  The program is designed to build and expand on baccalaureate nursing practice. Students must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a nationally accredited nursing program as well as a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in order to be eligible for admission.  A basic course in statistics is also required.

Nurses in advanced practice utilize theory and research based nursing process to deliver and/or manage client care. Graduate nursing education promotes the development of advanced critical thinking skills through its focus on creative and intellectual processes and facilitates change as evidenced by intellectual and professional growth. The graduate learning environment incorporates the principles of adult learning to promote critical thinking and inter-collaborative skills which may be used in conceptualizing, synthesizing, and evaluating management of nursing and health care problems. Nurses in advanced practice embrace the scholarly and systematic paradigm of evidence-based practice as necessary for the delivery of high-quality cost-efficient health care. They recognize the dynamic nature of health care and health care delivery, and are committed to life-long learning.  As members of the profession, nurses in advanced practice respond to the changing needs of society while practicing within the established ethical, legal, and competency standards of practice frameworks.

Please note that if proof of language proficiency is being provided by TOEFL or IELTS scores, the required scores for the MSN in Family Nurse Practitioner are higher than the Texas A&M University-Commerce institutional minimum.

Admission Consideration Requirements for All Students

• Apply Texas Application
• Application fee:  $50 domestic student 
• All official transcripts - Bachelor's degree, including all transcripts used towards bachelor's degree.  Any master's degree transcript or transcripts with graduate coursework (if applicable).
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a regionally accredited institution and a nationally accredited nursing program with at least a 2.75 GPA or higher overall
• Basic undergraduate statistics course
• Unencumbered, unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas or a compact state
• Three letters of reference from academic and/or professional sources using the MSN Reference Form, sent directly to the Graduate School
• Personal Statement Letter detailing reasons for pursuing the master's in nursing degree and include professional goals
• Resume(Vita)

• One of the following:

  a. Official General Test GRE Score or

  b. A minimum 3.00 GPA on the last 60 hours of nursing courses

• Application fee, $75.00, US dollars (this may be paid online when you apply)
• Bank Statement from the sponsor, must reflect a balance of at least $26,024.82 USD (must be less than 1 year old)

  1. Official TOEFL (IBT at least 100, CBT at least 250, or PBT at least 600).  Scores must be less than 2 years old, or
  2. Official IELTS (at least overall 7.00 band with a minimum of 6.5 on any of the 4 modules). Scores must be less than 2 years old.
