Certification as a Professional School Counselor in Texas

For students who are following the School Counseling

Masters Degree Plan  

Admitted school counseling students, who are following the school counseling masters' degree plan, must apply also to the Professional Certification program and provide the needed information. Education Certification department monitors all school certification programs and assists students with the certification process.   
The counseling program requires a passing score on the Master's Comprehensive Examination before you can be recommended to take the TExES.  

The State Board for Educator Certification & Academic Services also requires a passing score on the TExES and two years of classroom teaching experience. 

It is highly recommended that students have completed the teaching experience prior to applying to the program. All questions about teaching experience should be directed to the Education Certification & Academic Services.   

  •  Certification non-refundable fee - $50 (submit payment to MarketPlace)
  •  TEA Assessment non-refundable fee - $55 (submit payment    to MarketPlace)
  •  Transcripts
  •  Teacher Certificate
  •  District Service Record verifying two creditable years teaching experience at  completion of the school counselor program
  •  Hold a master’s degree at completion of the school counselor program
  •  Successfully complete the TExES school counselor exam
  •  Successfully complete the Texas A&M – Commerce  school counselor preparation program (to be determined by Texas A&M – Commerce school counselor program)
After September 5, 2017, contact if you have any questions pertaining to requirements to be issued a School Counselor Certificate.
The Counseling Program provides school certification for the school counseling degree program students ONLY. We no longer support certification only programs with students who already have a masters degree.
